A few weeks ago I received an advanced copy of Tom Ferry's book, Life! By Design.
I was thrilled to get an advanced copy of it. It is a challenging book and in my opinion should be read slowly so you can do all the exercises.
The exercises are challenging and really make you take a good look at your life both personally and professionally. Many times as I was reading I wanted to call Tom up and say, "Thanks a lot for waking me out of my coma."
My attention was grabbed at the first chapter when Tom shares his life story. We talk a lot about being transparent in our blogging but it is rare when we are really "that" transparent.
Because of Tom's own journey in experiencing Life by Design and his disclosure from the beginning chapter I was drawn into really taking a look at my own life and and asking myself that question, am I really living my life to the fullest?
Now, I'm not going to go into how he grew into what he is today, because it is Toms story and it is best read it in his own words.
For my exercise I chose the one on Page 39, where we ask 5 close friends to share with us these three things:
- What do you most admire about me?
- What do you see that I do that really works for me?
- What actions do you see that I do that really don't work for me?
I chose to send this to my team members. I wasn't totally surprised by the answers and who they came from. I appreciated their honesty and yes I am not going to lie, one comment hurt.
The point of the exercise is to begin the journey of looking inside.

Just like we look in a mirror and see what we "really look like", we need to have people we love, trust and know us hold up a mirror so we can see who we are on the inside.
To really live our life By Design we have to start by having an accurate picture of who we are and what a better way then to have that mirror held up to our inner man.
As I said in the beginning, Life! By Design is not a book to be read in one setting and then go on your merry way. It is written to awaken in us the things that are holding us back from living the life God has for us. (my words)
The question we need to answer is... Are we living our Life by Design or by Default?
Are you happy and fullfilled in your profession, your marriage, your family? If you are like me it is easy to get into comfortable patterns both professionally and personally.
Reading Life! By Design forced me to question some of the things I have let slide or got comfortable in.Once I started to wake up out of my "coma" as Tom calls it, I found I was waking up in other areas of my life.It is like a light bulb went off.
I am not going to go into the individual answers as it was an exercise and reflection for me. But, one team member did tell me, "Talking on the phone too loud when I am around."
I'll leave it to you to figure out who that might be.
In closing and in total transparency I liked the book so much that I ordered copies for all my Team members and my son who is in Real Estate School in Tn.
Sometimes it is important to read a book that shakes us up, if you read it with a open heart Life! By Design will do just that.
This post is to help promote Tom Ferry's upcoming book, LIFE! By DESIGN. The contents of my post are the result of some self reflection the preview chapter of the book asks us to do about ourselves.
You can Pre-Order the book now by visiting TomFerryBook.com. You can also participate in the promotion being done by ActiveRain for a chance to win some great prizes and 2500 points by visiting the promotional post here.
Everyone that orders a copy of the book between now and April 23rd, 2010 will also receive one ticket to attend Tom's Success Summit, August 24-26th and the MP3 audio role play program: Objection Handling for Buyers, Sellers and Short Sales.
In exchange for writing this post, I could win an iPad or other cool prizes, and this is to let you know so the FTC doesn't fine me.
