Today the A2 News announced it was closing its doors to publishing newspapers today . Although it is not totally surprising, it is still sad.For a newspaper to go away after 174 years is...well sad.
You might think ? "Sad, Missy why is it sad?"
I know most folks read their news on line and Ann Arbor is very technology oriented city. True.
But, jobs will be lost and I have some very favorite journalist that I enjoy reading there. Jo Mathis is one of my favorites, so is Geoff Larcom who I love to read during football season. I'm hopeing they both get hired at the new venture. Both Jo and Geoff write captivating human interest and event articles.
A new company will be opened in July called AnnArbor.com. Now I've been wondering how they got that domain all day.
- Did they buy it ?
- Did they own it ?
- For years?
According to Tony Dearing, who is a former Ann Arbor News managing editor and now the current Chief Content Leader of AnnArbor.com,
"People are spending most of their time online gathering around social and personal interests and we've got to engage them on their social and personal interests, as well as their news interests and be a true online community where, whatever it is you care about or are interested about in Ann Arbor, we'll engage you on."
This is social networking, folks.
According to Jeff Jarvis, a blogger and a professor at City University of N.Y. in Journalism who consulted on the new AnnArbor.com...
"Ann Arbor is a special place, it's a remarkable place, remarkable things can happen," Jarvis said. "People all over will be watching Ann Arbor to see what works, what doesn't work. You have the university there, you have Google there. It is a creative, smart community. Give people the right tools and we can be surprised with what comes out of there."
Ann Arbor News Publisher who will be Vice President of the new AnnArbor.com had this to say, "AnnArbor.com will be more than a Web site with articles. For example, social networking features will allow for real-time conversations, reporters will be equipped to report news as it happens, and reader input will drive features on the site.
I think there are some exciting days ahead as this new venture takes off to blend journalism with New Media.
But, if it's OK, I'll allow myself to sad today.
