Encouraging News for Michigan.
Michigan was ranked # 3 in the Nation for Corporate Expansions.
Site Selection’s annual Governor’s Cup award recognizes the state with the most new or expanded private-sector capital projects as tracked by publisher Conway Data Inc.’s New Plant Database.
Ohio was named #1 and Texas #2
Major new corporate projects for Michigan in 2009 included:
- Advanced energy storage and solar firms like Xtreme Power
- Clairvoyant Energy on the site of the former Ford Wixom assembly plant
- Advanced-battery development and manufacturing firms A123 Systems (Ann Arbor),
- Johnson Controls-Saft Advanced Power Solutions (Holland)
- Dow Kokam (Midland)
- Major expansions by General Motors and Ford for electric and hybrid vehicle production here.
Site Selection also recognized Detroit-Warren-Livonia as the nation’s No. 4 metro area with a population of one million or more for new and expanded corporate facilities. Among metro areas with a population of between 200,000 and one million, Grand Rapids-Wyoming tied for third; Holland-Grand Haven was fifth; and Ann Arbor and Lansing-East Lansing tied for sixth.
Michigan Economic Development Corp. president and CEO Greg Main said. “These high rankings reinforce that Michigan is a top-tier location for growing companies because of our aggressive initiatives, strong business climate and hard-working and talented workforce.”
Well I am cheering and clapping for this good news for our Michigan.

Mmmmm. Those Jeff Daniels ads for Michigan must be working.
It's great to read good news about the economy in Michigan.
Missy:
I'm glad that things are looking up in your neck of the woods. Corporate expansion brings jobs. Jobs bring people. People buy houses. Realtors get happy when that happens.
Good news for any state is great news for the country right now. It sounds like Michigan is getting ahead of the power curve on some green projects that arre going to benefit all of us later. Good news indeed.
Wow, Missy ~ I had no idea over here near Holland! Don't you have some good news for Grand Rapids too? If Michigan can just listen the Active Rain founder's blog about "retooling a flop" into a massive success...:).
We have so many magnificent natural resources here in Michigan that we above all states should be able to attract visitors and settlers without too much strain!
We need another Reese Peanut Butter Puffs cereal plant here...LOL
I don't see the reblog option for this post ~ I'd like to post it for our Michigan crowd too :)
Missy, Michigan really needs this kind of good news!
Hi Missy...I'm happy to hear the good news about Michigan. You've really had a tough time up there. Hope things are turning around.
Kate
Missy
Thanks for sharing the news from Michigan.
Good luck and success.
Lou Ludwig
Missy, That certainly IS encouraging and I loved hearing the good news.
YAY! I'm so happy to hear this news. Michigan is such a beautiful state. I'm cheering for a full come-back!
Evening Missy, Yay ! I see the ads promoting Michigan here in Florida and really like them ! Now if we can only get the U of M football program back on track !
Missy,
I am glad all those companies are coming and expanding in Michigan. We need all of them and more.
Missy,
I love to hear the GREAT news for Michigan! And Jeff Daniels sure is cute:-)
All the best, Michelle
Missy, Finally! Some fantastic news for Ann Arbor and all of Michigan. I'm so happy for you :)
Fabulous my friend and long time overdue! Ride the marke on the way up because you deserve it!
Missy, It's so good to hear some positive news about your area!
Missy,
What wonderful news.. So why is it happening in Michigan?
“These high rankings reinforce that Michigan is a top-tier location for growing companies because of our aggressive initiatives, strong business climate and hard-working and talented workforce.”
Most states say that they have agressive initiatives, a strong business climate and a hardworking and talented workforce.
SO WHAT IS MICHIGAN DOING THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER STATE? I would like to put my state reps on the same type of things!
Hey Missy, I'd logged out, but just had to stop by and comment on this post. YEAH!!!! :)
I think it must be Jeff Daniels. LOL
WE do have a very aggressive Michigan Development Corp and in Ann Arbor SPARK.
Judi, I don't know because our business tax is high but I am sure they are giving some abatements to brind companies here.
Great news Missy! A number 3 ranking is really impressive. Those JD adds must be working, as mentioned already!
Missy...any good job news about Michigan is always, always great news; A drive between 12 & 14 mile road on Van Dyke will evidence some growth. We NEED so much more in Macomb County. Took a drive today up toward Marine City & on 23 mile road saw a closed G.M. dealership that was under 3 yrs old, that was a real shock. The splinter effect of the automotive mess-up abounds.
My prayer is that Lansing folks also look to the small & mid-sized businesses here in Macomb Co., Oakland and parts of Detroit / Wayne that have felt the full effect of job loss. [Ford has it's West side plants that seem to be weathering this storm ] Lansing please acknowledge the East side of the state.
This news couldn't come at a better time.
Hi Missy -- Good news indeed. I grew up in MI and it's good to see that Flint is getting a piece of the Volt business, a new plant I think I remember reading about?
Michigan has been through so much - this is wonderful news! I saw some ads encouraging corporate relocation to MI in NY...glad its working!
Does this mean I should really think about buying up Detroit before the prices go up? Just kidding
Good to see good things going on there Missy. Hope things pick up. I know Hemlock announced a huge expantion there at the same time the announced the Tennessee plant here in Clarksville
Each time I read something about new jobs being created I get very excited. Even if it's only 10 more jobs at a small business it is very exciting.
With each new job there is one less person collecting unemployment, and they are not leaving the state.
Love this report Missy, thank you.
Michigan deserves a comeback as soon as possible! Great folks and a beautiful state...glad to see there is some sun shining on you all!
That's good news Missy, thanks for sharing!
Missy: As a native of Michigan and with family members still living in Traverse City and Flint, I am more than happy to see the news---It has been so difficult there since I can remember: I worked at Smith Bridgeman's Department Store and Lady Davidsons (Retail--both closed) in Flint and we used to suffer during the "Change Over" lay-offs but nothing was as bad as it has been since GM closed 12 factories in Flint in the 90's.
I love Michigan, and I certainly hope the corner has been turned--FINALLY! Great post!
Good to hear Missy. I hope this translates into a few more sales for you:)
"Michigan" and "Good News" in the same sentence is rare lately. Good that you've brought up the positive. Then again, they do still have YOU. ;-)
Missy, that's great! I do love your state - well, I only saw the area around Ludington, which is quite a distance from you I guess. I spent a week there last summer and we marveled at how pretty it was. If you ever get to the Ludington area you need to visit the House of Flavors restaurant - can't be beat!
ANYWAY - glad to hear good news for your beautiful state. It's been hard hit, and it's time for something uplifting!
Now Michigan is a bargain. When Oklahoma came out of the energy doldrums in the 1990's, we attracted business because of low cost, and a large pool of available and motivated labor. Sounds familiar and contemporty doesn't it.
Good for Michigan and good for the country! Good news, I like it!
Missy, that's encouraging news. I take it there are some significant incentive programs for businesses to select Michigan?
I would assume that companies are realizing that there is a trained, capable, work force, available for hire in Michigan.
Thanks for posting this encouraging economic news. It is to bad the main stream media doesn't report this information. As I type this MSNBC is putting a negative "spin" on the just released employment numbers, specifically pointing out the unemployment numbers for Detroit. think there is a hidden agenda with the news media?
Missy,
Finally, some good economic news from MI. I hope this is from "less government interference", and more business friendly initiatives, and if it is, then maybe states like CA can learn from it. It's sad to see what has happened to the auto industry states, over the last decade. Good luck, and hope you land more new industry.
It's good to hear some positive about MI, Missy. The news coming out of your state has been dismal for so long that I'm sure you have a bounce in your step after reading that.
I am happy for your state. It had not seen a lot of good news in the last few years.
I am so happy to read encouraging news about Michigan. While I am a Wisconsin Badger fan, I still want those Wolverines to have a prosperous economy...LOL!!!
If there was any state in the country that really needs this kind of positive change, it would be Michigan. To see that not only the iron and steel, brick and mortar manufacturing is coming back, but also the forefront of the new green energy economy calling Michigan home, really gives me hope for the future of our nation!
Always great to hear good news.
Missy, it's about time there was some good news for the great people of Michigan, especially the Detroit area. Congratulations!
