Ann Arbor homeowners, to get your dishwasher spelling clean. I haven't tried it yet, mine is fairly new but am pocketing it away for the future.
Tip of the Week: How to Freshen a Stinky Dishwasher. If you have a dishwasher that is getting a little sniffy or is showing some staining, pick yourself up a few packets of Kool-Aid brand unsweetened lemonade (I’m not trying to plug the brand here, but I have found that their packet recipe works better than the others). What you need to do is empty a packet into the soap dispenser; if you’re one of the lucky ones and your dishwasher has the little supplemental dispenser, put some in there as well. Now run the EMPTY dishwasher through a full cycle and you should be amazed. The result? Clean and lemony!

When I was selling in a resort which had notoriously chemical-filled water which would stain the dickens out of the dishwasher, we used Tang exactly the same way and it not only improved the odor, it removed the stains!
Kind of scary to think what it might be doing to our insides! An to think our Astronauts took it into space and I used to carry it around in my car in my youth, because I didn't like sodas! Go figure.
I learned something new, and would not have thought Kool-Aid was so useful.
i've been using lemon concentrate which works but doesn't get the stains out...
I missed Chrissy's post.....thanks for reblogging it. I'm going to give it a try!
Missy I suspect freshly squeezd lemon juice would probably produce similar results. Thanks for re-blogging this is a tip I can pass on.

Good tip. I'll be writing it down and saving it in case I ever need it.
Missy, great reblog and great idea!
Kool-Aid lemonade and Tang. Who would ever have guessed it. I think this is a lovely idea and I will try it.
Missy
Great tip, thanks for sharing it.
Good luck and success.

Missy,
Great tips. I guess the acid from the lemonade can cut the smell. Learn sometime new everyday.
Hi Missy... I'm no Heloise, but I have actually tried this and it really does work! It's the citric acid.
Kool-Aid Lemonaid! Love it! Thanks so much - it's on my list for tomorrow....
Missy ~ Really?
And to think we all used to drink this stuff as kids. I wonder what it was doing to our insides - LOL
I would suggest not wasting the package of lemonade. Instead, make yourself some real lemonade, or orange juice, or limeade, and put lemon, lime, or orange rinds in the utensil tray and run your dishwasher through a short cycle (so as not to waste too much water). You'll have the same result without wasting a good package of lemonade.
I like Russell's tip (above) for using the rinds. My garbage disposal always smell so fresh whenever I feed it citrus, so I imagine the dishwasher would appreciate it, too.
just when I think I have heard it all....love that! I heard ice cubes in garbage disposal sharpens the blades
also bleach and water mix spray in sink keeps roots away from drain lines.
