Project Grow in Ann Arbor

flowers from FlickrWell, we sprung forward in Ann Arbor and Saline, but where is Spring? I don’t know about you but I am ready for summer. Time to see the flowers pop out of the ground.

Did you know you can buy organic flowers to grow in your garden?

According to an Article from Environmental News Network, the flower industry is one of the heaviest users of agricultural chemicals and 60% of the flowers sold in the U.S. are imported from countries whose environmental standards are more lax than ours.

Roses for example can contain up to 50 times the amount of pesticides that are legally allowed in on the food we eat.

I love beautiful flowers in my home, throughout the year, but lately I’ve been pondering about the environmental issues and the workers that are being exposed to those chemicals every day.

Project Grow is a non-profit group in Ann Arbor, that will loan you space and give you the knowledge to grow organically. Here is the link to their calendar for the season where you can take classes. Project grow has been in Ann Arbor since 1972. You can apply on line to reserve your plot of land here. Since Project Grow is a volunteer group they are also looking for volunteers.

I also found this really cool place in California where you can purchase organic flowers and learn about organic gardening, called California Organic flowers. They may cost a tad more but the colors are brilliant and we are doing our part to save the environment.

Here is video that is all about growing organically and about the California Organic Farm.

Ready to join me in wishing for a soon to come Spring and Summer?…thought so

Spring is the new Fall. Doesn't Spring last about 78 hours in Michigan? I spent time in northwestern Ohio. The snow melted and all of a sudden it was Summer.

Andrew, we do go from sold to hot. LOL Maybe more than 78 hours, but not much. But, then you know our summers are wonderful and we only have to use AC about 2 weeks.

Missy, I hate to say this but our trees are blossoming, the bulbs are up and plants are beginning to come back to life.  It is my FAVORITE time of year.  You will get there soon.  I am so glad you wrote about organic flowers!  I have never heard of this although I do know many of my neighbors opt for no pesticides.  Every step we take, whether it is recycling or going organic, makes a difference!

When it hits 60 here, everyone shows up in tank top and shorts.  Usually in May, LOL!

Then in August, for the two weeks that the high might get above 85 degrees, the stores sell out of fans and ice....

Ok everyone rub it in, and I'll rub in in in July when your AC are cranking and we are enjoying the wonderful MI summers !!

Missy - Growing organic  vegetables and flowers is a great idea, yes much of the food available  to us was produced with the use of lots of pesticide.   I look forward to my garden each year, it provides me with all the cut flowers I need.  The only fertilizers is from my compose heap, you might remember me writing about have to rake lots of leaves, well I make good use of those leaves.

Missy, "Roses for example can contain up to 50 times the amount of pesticides that are legally allowed in on the food we eat."  Who would have thought?  I wonder if we have a group like that around Pasadena.  I'll have to check into this.  Amazing!

Hi Missy,
It feels like Spring here today, the temperature is in the low 70s.  It was a beautiful morning for the Easter egg hunt at church this morning for the little ones.  We came home afterwards and washed my car and played outside.  Heavenly!!
