The Sidetrack Bar and Grill is a charming restaurant in Ypsilanti Michigan; it is located in Depot Town and has the best burgers. It is a completely laid back atmosphere and reminds me of the way life use to be, with lots of old photos on the walls of the history of the SideTrack Restaurant.
The Sidetrack has been in business since the 1800's when it was started across from the railroad tracks in Ypsilanti. The Amtrak Train passes through there although it never stops anymore. You have to pick up a ticket to Chicago in Ann Arbor.
Brick walls, hardwood floors, and a gorgeous bar and every time I go it is standing room only. The Sidetrack has high ceilings, a warm fireplace roaring in the winter months and an outside patio to enjoy in the summer time.
I took Allyssa there yesterday after we had gone shopping for her first car. She had never been and I suggest going. Of course she loved it; the ambiance just takes you in.
When we pulled up she said, "mom did you see what is on the side of the building?" No, I was driving, so after we ate, we walked out and Allyssa took a photo. One the side of the building out above the patio is this saying credited to,
Benjamin Franklin, "Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy."
In 2002, the Sidetrack was named "one of the 20 hamburgers you should eat before you die" by GQ Magazine. The famous burger is 1/3 lb and only costs $5.25. Of course you can get a ½ burger for only $2.00 more. But, it is way too big for most folks. Other menu items at the SideTrack are here.
Gayle King, Oprah Winfrey's best friend said on the Oprah Show, about their burgers, "It is the best of the best."
The Sidetrack is located in the Depot Town communityat: 56 Cross Street, Ypsilanti, MI 48197

Awesome! I am soooo into foodie paradise spots. Thank you for sharing this. BTW, love the eye candy! More please. Enjoy your day, Missy. :-)
Sidetrack Bar does indeed look very charming! I also love the sign on the awning...BEER IS THE PROOF THAT GOD LOVES US! LOL
I also meant to add that a 1/3 lb "REALLY GOOD" hamburger for $5.25 is well worth the visit! Wow!!
My oldest son (Mr. Bachelor) mentioned the Sidetrack to me. Loved it. He is often at Pub 13 (the dualing pianos club) just a couple of blocks away on N. Washington.
It's only 9:43 in the morning and now I'm craving a burger...
I love their sweet potato fries. Depot Town has the best classic car cruise night in the area on Thursday nights during the summer. We are regular participants in the car show and regular diners at the Sidetrack. When you visit Depot Town check out Gordon's Five & Dime. They have old fashioned candy and toys. It is just a fun store to poke around in.
Missy, That is so awesome, I saw that show when Gayle went all over looking for the absolute BEST BURGER in the U.S. Definitely worth a roadtrip for in my eyes :) I loved reading this and glad you get to enjoy this place!
Missy, Okay, sounds like many of us are now craving burgers from Sidetrack. What a charming place! Love the brick walls and the fireplace sounds delightful! 2 of my favorite things.
I always knew there was a reason I loved Benjamin Franklin:)
Sounds like a good reason to drive to Ypsilanti.
Missy - well you convinced me, and many others, that this is THE place to go to for burgers. Looks like a great venue. A wonderful Localism post.
Jeff
Gorgeous architecture AND amazing burgers! Sign me up! I have also heard the Benjamin Franklin quote going as "Wine is proof..." Either / or, I feel the love!
Missy - Sounds like a place I would love, but instead of eating I would be busy checking out all the interesting photos on the wall. I really love places that have a lot of history. If only the walls could talk I am sure since it has been around since the 1800's there would be many stories.
Missy - yes, this post is a mulligan. What a charming place to enjoy a good ole' burger. And Ben was a wise man.
