But, I am going to shop there this Christmas season.
Why?
As a mother of two sons in the Navy, I read and loved Sears support of our military.
Not only do they support our sons and daughters in Active Duty but also those who are in the Reserves. Please take the time to read everything they do for those serving in the military. I had no idea, but they have been doing this for years.
Military Pay Differential and Benefits Continuation
In September 2004, the company extended its military pay differential (fills the gap between military pay and employer pay) and benefits continuation to 60 months for eligible employees called to duty in the Reserves or National Guard.
1) While deployed, eligible employees can:
2) Continue participating in SHC's life insurance, medical and dental programs.
3) Receive annual merit pay increases, incentive pay.
Sears Holding Company which includes KMart holds a comparable position for deployed employees for up to five years. The company has encouraged and supported employees serving in the armed forces for decades.
Records indicate that Sears provided support to employees serving in the military in 1916. Sears pay differential was first instituted in 1990 for Operation Desert Shield-Storm.
I encourage you to read some of the stories of Heros at Home, and how they have helped with wheelchairs, and remodeling of homes.
Any U.S. company, like Sears and K-Mart that is doing so much good for our men and woman serving in the Military are on my shopping list this year.

***Just found out Jamie in the photo above is being deployed in January. He is in the Navy reserves and he had no clue until the phone rang on Wed. morning. ***

Missy, that makes an extra incentive to shop at Sears this year. Our troops need support and to know that we are all praying for them. A BIG THANK YOU to Jamie and all of our other troops who work so hard to keep us safe and free!
Missy,
I will definitely lean towards Sears after reading this...I love doing business with local retailers and companies who reach out like this!!! Thanks, Fran
Missy: OKAY, I NOW know where I am buying my new dishwasher. GO SEARS!!!!
Great information Missy. I don't care if it good marketing on the part of Sears.
Works for me. I shop for an absolute boatload of family.
I didn't know that Missy so thank you so much for the information. Hope you had a delicious Thanksgiving!
Missy - Wow, good on Sears! Its nice to hear of companies taking care of anyone these days, but its always a good thing to take care of military families. As a resident of San Antonio, I see military people on a daily basis (I feel like the odd man out as a civilian) and no matter what your take is on any war, the military, the government - these people are doing what they can and I will always support them (helps that both my father and brother were Marines as well). As a side note, in Texas, as members of the Texas Association of Realtors, we get discounts on Sears appliances (their brands as well as any other brands they carry) as one of our benefits (and I learned they don't have to be for us...we can use our discounts to help our clients remodel their new home). Basically, I'm a fan of Sears already, this just adds to it!
Matt, I am going to ask when I am in there. That is a wonderful benefit and it makes me smile to see TAR doing this for you and their members.
Lenn, they have been doing it for years, perhaps I just never paid attention before.
Kat, I try to buy all my appliances at Sears, their return policy is amazing. I must have returned 6 Sharks over the years, when the belts kept breaking and a baby stroller three times. I like their no questions asked policy.
Fran, I like to keep the money flowing to companies that do donate to charities that I support and although the military is not a charity they are doing so much for the guys that get called up and must leave their jobs.
I had no idea that Sears was a supporter of the millitary. Good to know...for some reason I never shop there. I will have to give them some business:)
Missy!
Happy Thanksgiving! Yes, I learned about Sears' support of our military last year. Every US based company should follow their lead. Many thanks to your wonderful sons for keeping our USA safe!
Hugs
Antoinette
Missy... I only found out about this as of lately, from reading some blogs. But I didn't know how far back this went. thanks for the little history lesson... and Jamie will be fine... he'll be in my thoughts and prayers...
Missy - I didn't know that Sears did that. That's a great reason to shop there! :)
Missy, thanks for telling us about the Sears policy, its truly a great way to support America, and thanks to your sons for their service to our country. May this holiday season bring peace and comfort to all.
Missy - I am always impressed with corporations that make these commitments to helping the community at large in some meaningful way. So were you out there at 5 AM today?
Jeff
Jeff, are you kidden' me? No way............but I will shop just not into all that fighting.
Missy - congratulations that you have two sons in the Navy - that is awesome. I think it is extremely admirable what Sears provides to our military men and women.
Good job breaking the news to everyone Missy. What a great country we would have if more companies took this approach to life and their business! God bless your children. I thank them for their service!
It would be nice if they could support the American ecomony by offering goods made in America. We just bought new appliances...all name brand. Frig made in Canada, stove in Mexico.
Missy ... good to know! I just bought a couple things from Sears and now I will be sure to go back. I have always gone to Sears as a "last resort" and I am always surprised at what they have and their prices.
Missy, thanks for passing this along.....I will definitely make it a point to go to Sears to shop.
Hi Missy,
Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention - I had no idea about this.
I believe that now is a great time for people to be more aware of what they are buying and from whom they are buying it from.
Missy, that is a great corporate citizen Sears is being doing that with the pay differential. Thank you also for your sons and their service to our country.
I do not shop at Sears much, but will definitely see them in a new light and they will be one of the stores I frequent in the future. Thank you for pointing out their support of our troops.
Missy -
More importantly than shopping at Sears I want to thank you and your sons for protecting our nation. With what is going on in Mumbai, India and the World in general - those in the Military and thier families have my and my families utmost respect and admiration. I can't imagine the stress it places on the family of those deployed.
Our family will not be shopping anywhere for Christmas but next time I need something for a client Thank You gift I will certainly go to Sears- online - the nearest one is an hour away. Have a happy holiday season.
This is awesome! Thank you for sharing this. :-)
I was amazed to watch the news this morning and wee people all over the country waiting in line, in the freezing cold, at or before 4am ,
I'm impressed that Sears has assisted their military employees for so long. Hopefully many others in corporate America are following this example.
Hi Missy... in this time of economic dowturn, where employers (often out of economic necessity) do not always demonstrate support or loyalty to their employees, this is so refreshing to read. Sears is an American institution and has a history of offering highly regarded quality products to the American consumer. Thanks for sharing this... I'll be shopping there.
I think that is just awesome that Sears honors our military in this way. I certainly will look there first when I do my Christmas shopping.
That is so cool, Missy. I had NO idea that Sears (and KMart) was so supportive of our military. That gives me a reason to shop there.....
Missy, I had heard that Sears was one of the the best employers out there in respect to helping our military members and their employees. I had no idea that they went above and beyond and have for generations.
Wow. I think people in my family are going to receive some pretty cool Craftsman tools this year.
Sleep in the sweatshirt. It will help you feel closer to Jamie as he deploys. May God treat him and all his mates well and bring them home quickly and safely.
Great information that will definately influence my shopping this holiday season.
The Navy's a great service to be in. Lots of technical education available and travelling. It can be a lot of fun. College courses are often available while deployed and some training can count toward a college degree. The after service benefits (VA loan and GI Bill) can't be beat!
Missy: It is always nice to support the business that supports our troops.. Great post
Hi Missy, Interesting post. I had no idea they were so involved in support of our troops.
WOW - I have never seen so many responses to a blog in my life! Good job and great blog!
Hi Missy
We learn something new everyday, I did know this about Sears and their commitment to the military.
Good luck and success
Lou Ludwig
That is amazing, I will try to buy something there this year for sure. I know I need some new tires this year, and they sell them. I am suprised that this does not get any more press than this. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
Did not know about this. My family when i was growing up always bought their appliances from SEARS. The company has been around a long time and I had no idea. I am glad you pointed this out, it puts them back in front of me. More importantly we all salute you and your sons for protecting us all. These are difficult times all around.
Wow that is great of them. All of our appliances came from there and my dad's wife in Michigan picked up a front loading washer & dryer for $600 from there today.
Even in this economy that is one of the best reasons to support companies that do the right thing. Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for sharing and I look forward to the blue light specials. I wonder if they still do that.
Missy-
What a great post. Please thank your two sons for serving, and thank you for your sacrifice. RE/MAX has a similiar program for spouses and returning veterans called Operation RE/MAX. It's so good to see such well known companies doing these things, and doing them out of the limelight a bit.
j
Thats good they are helping out. I wish the government would do more.
Sears has always been my "go to" place for appliances and lawn mowers and weed eaters, tires and that sort of stuff. My husband is in the market for a new big screen TV and I think they have those at sears too. Thanks for the information. I'll make sure I shop there some this season as well.
Hi Missy,
Thank you for sharing this, I had no idea Sears did this. I didn't really shop there before, I will definitely reconsider that!
Thank you and God Bless your sons for being willing to lay down their lives to protect our freedom!
Hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful.
Missy ... You made my day. Now I know what I can do to "do my part".
Thanks for the reminder.
Merry Chistmas all.
Hi Missy - Again, as so many have said, Thanks for sharing this information about Sears' support of our military. I will use this info in my buying decisions.
Missy - I had no idea about that Sears policy. That definitely makes it worthwhile to support them by shopping there.
It's nice to know companies are supporting our troops. Thanks for sharing the info--looks like I was not the only one who did not know!
Missy - I have done a lot of shopping at Sears and never knew they were such huge supporters of the military. They will definitely be on the top of my list for this year's Christmas shopping. Bless you and thank your sons for their service to our nation. I will keep them both in my thoughts and prayers and most especially for Jamie during his deployment.
Sears is an American institution - thanks for posting this. I think it's time for a new vacuum cleaner from Sears.
Missy, I pray Jamie is safe and your other son as well. It is very important our companies support our members of the military. Very important. I am glad to hear about Sears.
Hi Missy-This is awesome..and I never knew this..please tell those boys I love them and thank them for me! Keep smiling..you did a wonderful job mom! p.s. the computer scientist..served in the Navy!
I will have to make sure I put shopping at Sears on my list this year. What a good thing for them to do.
Thanks for the reminder Missy. My wife used to manage at Sears. It's a good company even though they have gone through some interesting changes (like most other good company's have).
What a great article, Missy! Not only is this perfect for being the patriotic thing to do but during these tough economic times we need to bring things back home and spend our money where it will make a difference.
wow! look at all those comments... Missy, Sears may owe you some commission on these folks. thanks for the good news about someone doing something positive for our country. have a great Holiday season.
I had no idea. This is a great way for them to support our military.
I had no idea. This is a great way for them to support our military.
Missy, Great reason to shop at Sears! Thank your sons for me for their honorable service to our country!!! Freedom is NOT free and I appreciate them defending my freedom.
You have ever right to shop at Sears with out apologizing.
I have a garage FULL of Craftsman Tools. I never seem to be able to make it much further into the store. Ok, once I made it to electronics and got a big screen TV...
I will make sure and support Sears for thier effort my friend. Be blessed and have a great weekend.
This is a good reason to support them -- glad you told us all about this.
Hello Missy ~ I will be shopping at Sears this year!
I didn't know Sears support the military. We shopped for appliances at Sears. I also love Lands End. I was at the store few weeks ago and I saw some nice clothing. I will definitely shop there this year.
Yes they do, and so do I so I will be shopping there as well.
Thanks for sharing this info. I shall do some shopping at Sears and Kmart.
I couldn't think of a better reason for anyone to shop at Sears. I truly enjoyed this post.
Diane, I already got your re-blog in my Google Alerts. LOL
I hadn't heard about this, but that's great news. I usually don't shop there, but I will pop into Kmart to see what Martha Stewart has on the shelves. :-)
Missy, I'm there! Thanks for the heads up about this. I wasn't aware of the impact this could have for our men. I have a son in Iraq and admire what our military does for us.
This is what I call really giving back! I'll check out the peacoats while I'm there!
Later in the rain~Deb
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! We have a new Sears by the Target (which I shop at also to avoid Wally World!) I love the way everything is presented in a Sears now. It's not your daddy's Sears anymore!
Thanks for sharing this informatino, I had no idea! This is incredible, and I would love to see them get some publicity. But then, that's not why they do it, is it!
Thank you for sharing, I too was not aware of their military support. Although, I am avoiding any shopping until the crazy rat race is over with an overload of people shopping. I will keep in mind Sears and Kmart.
